Export markets for cassava and cassava products in the first 3 months of 2020

According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, the export of cassava and cassava products in March 2020 was estimated at 332,727 tons, equivalent to 116.03 million USD with the average price of 348.7 USD/ton, rising sharply 47.4% in volume, 63.6% in turnover and 11% in price compared to February 2020; increasing 22.9% in volume, 10.4% in turnover but decreasing 10.2% in price compared to March 2019.

In general, the export volume of this commodity in the first quarter of 2020 reached 767,699 million tons (258.8 million USD), climbing 13.4% in volume and slightly rising 0.9% in value over the same period in 2019. The average export price of cassava and cassava products in the first 3 months reached 337.1 USD/ton, falling 10.8%.

In the first quarter of 2020, China remained the main market consuming cassava and cassava products of Vietnam, accounting for 91.6% of the total volume and 90.7% of the total export turnover of cassava and cassava products from Vietnam. The export to this market in the first 3 months of 2020 reached 703,033 tons, equivalent to 234.76 million USD, increasing 16.5% in volume and 3.2% in turnover over the same period in 2019; However, export prices decreased by 11.4% with an average price of 333.9 USD/ton.

In the first 4 months of the year, the export is estimated at 1.02 million tons, equivalent to 349 million USD (climbing 11.5% in volume and falling 0.01% in value over the same period in 2019).

Notably, this product has many growth opportunities because China is reviving the pig industry after the African swine fever, leading to an increase in feed demand. Besides, the export price of cassava is still increasing due to Sri Lanka Cassava Mosaic Virus (SLCMV) continues to explode in China. China is now well controlling the Covid-19 epidemic, so the trade situation between the two countries has also become more favorable.

In addition, Vietnam also exported to South Korea 24,098 tons of cassava and cassava products, collecting 6.7 million USD, decreasing 13.4% in volume and 14.7% in turnover over the same period; to Malaysia market 13,481 tons, equivalent to 5.67 million USD, rising 110.2% in volume and 102% in turnover; to Taiwan 11,056 tons, equivalent to 4.54 million USD, increasing 59.8% in volume and 45.7% in turnover. Notably, the export to Japan. Although the volume is not large (1,384 tons, equivalent to 0.64 million USD), when compared to the same period last year, it increased 32 times in volume and 17.1 times in turnover.
